“Violence surrounds us. No social milieu, no culture, no class is immune to it. Can we manage to see it for what it is?” People talk about victims everywhere. But increasingly, this doesn’t refer to people who have suffered injustice. Rather, it refers to those who disrupt harmony, who are considered weak, who drag others down, or who want to put themselves above others. If they didn’t whine so much, people say, we wouldn’t have so many problems. Harshness toward others is increasingly seen as desirable—and while inhumanly high demands are placed on victims, powerful alliances of patriarchal complicity are changing our world for the worse. Alice Hasters describes a cultural shift that is no coincidence with the rise of authoritarianism and fascism. What happens to a society in which sensitivity is considered elitist? And the law of the jungle as authentic? With intellectual restlessness, she counters the spread of this new harshness with the political power of solidarity.

Alice Hasters is an author and cultural critic. In 2019, she published the long-running bestseller *What White People Don’t Want to Hear About Racism, But Should Know* (hanserblau). The major (identity) crises of our time and society are the focus of her second nonfiction book, *Identity Crisis* (hanserblau), published in October 2023. As an editor, she worked for “Tagesschau” and “Jetzt mal konkret” (rbb) until 2021, and as host of “Einhundert – Storys mit Alice Hasters” (Dlf Nova) until 2022. Since 2016, she has produced and hosted the podcast “Feuer&Brot” with her friend Maxi Häcke, in which the two examine current topics in pop culture, politics, and society every two weeks. In April 2026, her new non-fiction book “Anti-Victim: Why We Despise Vulnerability” will be published by Ullstein.
